GOOD VS BAD STRESS!

The positive side of the coin is called ‘Eustress’.Its main player is excitement through adrenaline being released, this creates pulse quickening effects we feel it has no significance to perceiving fear. Eustress is a thing of beauty it offers a productive lifestyle making working, studying or learning enjoyable and exciting instead of a chore, as seen with ‘distress’.

Eustress results when a person perceives a stressor as a positive. It produces a feel of euphoria. Course we all love a little bit of euphoria in our life. Bit like when we start a new chapter in life like a new job/ career, new exciting goals, working on passions. We feel a sense of excitement through adrenaline being released.

The stress bombs of emotion, the gateway or the crem de le crem to mental health symptoms developing if not grabbed by the scruff of the neck and taught a lesson. It’s time to use that deep word ‘life’! Nahhh not David Attenborough wooing us on an evening with his soft soothing delicate voice.

Life is not easy, it will be tough, challenging, emotional at times but understanding the main threats to triggering bad stress creates priceless awareness to send an RPG into the threat of emotion before it goes K- BOOM.

Chronic stress is form of bad stress it occurs when we repeatedly face ‘stressors’ that take a heavy toll. A stressful job, lifestyles or an unhappy home life can develop chronic stress. Because our bodies aren’t designed for chronic stress, we can face negative health effects (both physically and emotionally) if we deal with chronic stress for an extended period of time.

Before we get into the control room of stimulating with stress. Let’s break down a few main causes of stress bombs (stressors) in young people.

STRESS BOMB TRIGGERS

IN YOUNG PEOPLE

Each factor below can be a result of the body perceiving a situation as a stress. In this process, adrenal glands produce and release cortisol (stress hormone) into your blood stream. This can become a direct build-up of distress (bad stuff) if not stimulated or controlled. Exercise is Mr clever clogs, because it stimulates cortisol levels. In other words, deactivating the stress by producing a release.

WORKLOAD/EXCESSIVE PRESSURE - stacking & racking paper for dayz

  • Workload back log, build-up of long – term tasks by leaving them till last minute
  • Social life before work, leaving little time to achieve tasks set
  • Unrealistic short – term deadlines, with quantity of work given
  • Frequently under- staffed for long periods, increasing workload

NEGATIVE FRIENDSHIPS / RELATIONSHIPS - processes of thinking

Processes of thinking can affect cortisol with negative mood states. Because cortisol levels rise during physiological stresses, negative friendships or relationships can trigger a distress signal to the body.

  • What you view/ see on social media platform
  • Comparing your life against others online frequently
  • To many associates or not investing enough time with real friends
  • Gossip, drama orientated groups
  • Energy drainers - negative attitude towards things you enjoy doing

FINANCIAL PRESSURES / STRAIN - Show me the honies

Don’t we all wish we were finically safe always! Financial difficulties can increase our worry, panic and stress. Try to focus your mind away from:

  • Following others
  • Lifestyle before your pocket
  • Brain washed by materialistic goods
  • Image isn’t everything
  • Hanging around with the wrong types of people for you

SLEEP DEPRIVATION

Sleep deprivation effects cognitive behaviour and skills. Studies show chronic or acute sleep deprivation will negatively impact learning, thinking, attention, alertness, reaction time, memory and creative skills. Triggers:

  • Frequent alcohol binging
  • Regular cocaine abuse
  • Regular MDMA / ecstasy abuse
  • Persistent excessive workload
  • Persistent financial worries

 SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS

PSYCHOLOGICAL

  • Frequent Anxious / Panic Mood states
  • Frequent Depressive Low Moods
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Memory Problems.

PHYSICAL

  • Severe Fatigue.
  • Muscle Weakness.
  • Acne.
  • Flushed Face.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Weight gain around the face.
  • Weight gain, mostly around the midsection & upper back.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Headaches.

EXERCISE & CORTISOL

BECOMING IMMORTAL

TO STRESS

Exercise is acknowledged by the body as a form of stress and stimulates the release of cortisol. In general, the more your fitness improves the better the body becomes at dealing with stress. This means that less cortisol will be released during exercise and in response to emotional or psychological stresses. Meaning a sick coping mechanism to deal with any distress (bad stress).
